For years, we've heard about this place from a friend in town, and this time, we had a crew that also wanted to check it out together with us.
So, we headed south on 550 (the access point for this trail is jsut over the pass, on the right, shortly after the turn for Black Bear Pass)...

[Intermission: continuing the story about the 'Discount Tire' FJ Cruisers...]

[taken from this thread on the FJ forum; specifically, this post]

...when we were just about to head up to the Bullion King Mine, we saw you (at least one of the Discount Tire FJs) as you were going North on 550, approaching Red Mountain Pass.

I'm the guy that you recall seeing crouching at the side of the road with a camera pointed your way (we discussed it later...Saturday morning at the Imogene line-up I think).

Funny thing was ...at the exact moment that I clicked the trigger button on my camera, a big-@$$ pickup truck, going South, came right into view, and I completely missed the road-side shot...

Not to worry, after I realized what just happened, I quickly snapped another one as you were going around the curve.

In this shot, I first thought I was getting the two Icebergs, but now it looks like the one Iceberg was being followed by a Sandstorm (TTSE) with a snorkel and a couple red fuel cans on top...

Well, as you can see, I didn't have much luck getting a great action shot of you guys, but perhaps I'll have better luck in your drawing. Please pick whichever non-awesome pic of mine that you like best as my entry.

Thanks again, guys.

[back to your regularly scheduled program...]

This is the view to the south just a little ways up on the trail.
The bare (redish/orangish) mountain peak on the left overlooks Silverton from the north.
The others are mainly to the south.

This alone makes some folks turn back right here...

It's a very beautiful place

with a very scary drive to get there for some people

old mining-related equipment and buildings every once in a while

a couple streams to cross

waterfalls and grand subalpine-to-alpine vistas

There's actually a bit of a drop-out gully just tot he outer edge of the Vodoo Blue's tires,
and we had to go a bit up on that hump on the other side to avoid it

Unfortunately, not all is well in Paradies when they let humans enter the mix.
This character though, since he didn't want to drive any further, it would be OK to block the trail while he went for a hike.

I don't think we were the first to notice...

Finally, he came back around, and moved out of the way so we could continue

looking back to the north, we could see the roadblock pickup and another vehicle heading out

When we drove as far as we could, we got out for a hike up to the lake.

I just thought it was cool to see how this waterfall cut so deep back into the rock.

One of the local residents (a marmot)

It was a very narrow road, with drop-offs galore, but well worth the journey.
I'm so glad we had the opportunity to go there with such good buds.
We're very much looking forward to more of that next time around.

Later that evening, we headed out to the KOA for some fun with a bunch of FJ Summiteers.
Along the way up 550, I saw the beautiful sunset on the mountainside.
Of course, it doesn't look as good here as it did to me at that moment, but at least this triggers the memory.

That's all for Thursday.

Side note:
I took way, way, way more photos than what I have displayed on these pages.
if you were on a trail run with me, and want to see if you're in there anywhere,
or if you're just curious about the rest of our trip,
please feel free to download the 'BULK' sets of full resolution images from each day.
They are available
here.
Just download the zip file/s for whichever day/s you are interested in, extract them, and have at it.
