Coal Bank Pass | San Juan CR 14
v scroll down v
On this day, we started out with a hike at Coal Bank Pass.
It's one of our favorite places; lots and lots of flowers, all over the place...
Parked Sandi in the woods near the trailhead. Nice shade in such a beautiful, sunny place...
walking to the trailhead
It's so overgrown with beauty in some places that it pretty much gobbles up the trail
Don't get too mesmerized by the pretty little swamp-ponds, or you may become lunch for some mosquitoes
There are a few opportunities for playing in the snow along the trail
Engineer Mountain (13,000+ ft).
Up till now (and including this hike), we've just hiked up to the base, but next time (July 2012),
we're planning on setting out a little bit earlier in order to actually summit this one.
JammerGirl spent some time reading while I got in a little paleontology
sporting the 2010 FJ Summit goodie bag...
For those that are interested, here are some photos of some of the fossils I was looking at up there
On our way back down...
Along the way, I noticed some very interesting fungi. Clickhere to sneak a peek.
same pond as above; looking back up at the outcrop where I was checking out the fossils
At this point, looking across the valley to the south, we can see thePurgatory ski area (Durango Mountain Resort).
